Meet Judge Stephanie Sawyer
Judge Stephanie M. Sawyer is a dedicated public servant, a passionate advocate for justice, and a leader in Philadelphia’s legal community. Currently serving in the Criminal Trial Division of the Court of Common Pleas, she brings years of experience, integrity, and a deep commitment to fairness in the judicial system.
Before taking the bench, Judge Sawyer spent nearly two decades as a private attorney, tirelessly fighting for her clients and ensuring that every person—regardless of background—received fair and equal treatment under the law. Her firsthand experience in criminal defense, civil rights, and advocacy has shaped her judicial philosophy: justice must be fair, accessible, and focused on rehabilitation, not just punishment.
Beyond the courtroom, Judge Sawyer is the Founder and CEO of The Sentencing Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to criminal justice reform, fair sentencing, and reentry support for returning citizens. She has made it her mission to help people successfully reintegrate into society, breaking cycles of incarceration and creating opportunities for a better future.
Judge Sawyer believes that a strong and fair legal system builds stronger communities. Whether she’s presiding over cases, mentoring young legal professionals, or working to reform outdated policies, she remains committed to ensuring that justice serves everyone—fairly, equitably, and with compassion.
